Gensler - CamLIFE Cambridge

Project Description:

Designed by Gensler, the CamLIFE workplace in Cambridge represents a forward-thinking approach to office design, combining functionality with a refined, contemporary aesthetic. The space is centred around expansive volumes and a striking atrium, allowing natural light to flow deep into the interior and define the overall atmosphere.

A carefully balanced material palette and considered spatial planning create a workplace that feels both open and structured, supporting collaboration while maintaining moments of calm and focus. The design reflects a modern understanding of how people interact with their environment, resulting in a space that is both efficient and visually engaging.

The Shoot:

This project marked another collaboration with the Gensler team, always a pleasure to work with. There is a strong sense of trust and alignment in the process, which allows us to move efficiently and achieve a refined result through close on-site collaboration. Working alongside the lead designers, we approached the shoot with a clear vision and a shared attention to detail.

The project was photographed in two stages as the space progressed towards completion, with the first shoot in October and the second in January. This allowed us to capture the project at key moments while maintaining a consistent visual approach across both sessions.

Cambridge provided a beautiful setting for the shoot, and it was a pleasure to spend time there ahead of the shoot days. The architecture itself was a joy to photograph, particularly the large open volumes and atrium spaces where natural light played a defining role in shaping each composition. In areas with limited daylight, I introduced supplemental lighting to maintain consistency and ensure every space was captured with clarity and balance.

We photographed the spaces with people, often working with members of the Gensler team as models, as well as without. While both versions were delivered, I chose to present the imagery without people to place full emphasis on the design and architectural qualities of the space.

We were fortunate to have moments of sunlight breaking through, bringing warmth into the atrium and adding a subtle, almost unexpected softness to the interiors. These moments helped elevate the atmosphere, particularly during the winter months, giving parts of the space a brighter and more inviting feel.

Post-production was essential in bringing everything together. The focus was on establishing a consistent colour grade, refining the balance between natural and supplemental light, and removing minor distractions to achieve a clean, polished result. The final images reflect both the design's clarity and the space's atmosphere, capturing a cohesive, carefully considered workplace environment.

It is always rewarding to be trusted by a globally recognised practice such as Gensler to help showcase their work, and this project stands as another strong example of what can be achieved through a well-executed collaborative process.
