Jean Nouvel - National Museum of Qatar

Project Description:

The National Museum of Qatar, designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, is a striking architectural landmark inspired by the desert rose, a naturally occurring crystal formation found in Qatar’s arid landscape. Located in Doha, the museum spans more than 430,000 square feet and offers an immersive experience that brings together architecture, culture, and history.

Its complex interlocking disk structure reflects a dialogue between tradition and modernity, housing galleries, a 220-seat auditorium, a research centre, and heritage displays. The project stands as a powerful example of how contemporary architecture can express cultural identity while engaging a global audience.

The Shoot:

This was another personal project driven by a genuine interest in experiencing and documenting a landmark piece of contemporary architecture. I spent several days in Qatar exploring both the building and its surroundings during Ramadan, which provided a rare opportunity to work in a quieter, more contemplative environment.

Having long admired the work of Ateliers Jean Nouvel, I found that seeing the museum's scale and complexity in person was an incredible experience. I approached the shoot with flexibility, returning to the site throughout the day to observe how changing light conditions transformed the structure’s surfaces and spatial perception. Working across architectural projects in this way allows for a more considered response to the building rather than forcing a fixed shot list.

At times, the atmosphere felt almost surreal, with the shifting tones of the sky and the sculptural forms creating a cinematic landscape rather than a traditional museum setting.

The long shooting days, from sunrise through to sunset, were physically demanding but creatively rewarding. Post-production focused on refining the images by removing minor distractions and maintaining a clean, cohesive look that reflects the scale and character of the architecture, as well as a broader body of interior photography in London and on international projects.
